when holly randall posted a teaser image of honey gold in this scene on twitter (a rare step for her, as she almost never expresses much enthusiasm about the girl/girl scenes she shoots unless it's a treat-of-the-month spectacular) to compliment her beauty and great working attitude, i knew that when it was released this scene would be one of my top priorities as soon as i could shake myself free of april's backlog. honey gold is a remarkable pornstar whose performances tend to run winsome and goofy despite her heavily-tatted look: of course twistys corporate, looking at her pictures in a montreal office, would cast her as the menacing alpha here, but her irrepressible smile (quite possibly the best in porn) and basic sweetness (despite a heavily traumatic history) mean that anyone coming to this scene hoping for some hotandmean-style rough domination will be disappointed.

it was close to a stroke of genius for honey to stay entirely silent throughout the opening, letting normative cultural anxieties about women of color (especially tattooed women of color) do the menacing for her while alex grey babbles nervously about having a boyfriend. when honey finally speaks, it's to compliment alex's ass once she's already begun to strip her: and as the sex continues the supposed menace of the opening (which was never more than an effect of the soundtrack and camera angles) dissipates into two women having mutually enjoyable, even mutually enthusiastic sex.

i haven't particularly noticed alex grey before now (fresh-faced blondes are just not where my priorities lie), but she's a pro and put in great work here, although for someone who delivered the line "i don't swing that way" she sure was eager to get her hands and mouth on honey's body once the clothes started to come off. in all honesty, it's hard to blame her: honey gold has never looked better (and she never looks bad). my compliments to holly randall's excellent lighting crew for making honey's skin tones positively glow. the contrast between her melanin and alex's pallor was such a striking visual that the bareness of the prison set hardly bothered me.

it was very obviously a set: randall's glamour-photography roots mean that her scenes (especially for twistys) are rarely particularly cinematic or intimate: classically balanced, with each shot carefully composed, the lighting dramatic and crystalline, and the positions idealized, nearly every frame of the sex could run in a magazine if there were any magazines left for them to run in. that's not a bad thing; in fact it's one of the reasons i like glamour sites like twistys so much. their stylized scenarios, polished visuals and crisp editing mean that verisimilitude isn't an option, and we're in the realm of pure fantasy.

but it's a testament to the performers and to the looseness with which randall holds the reins of the scene during the sex that i believe in their connection and mutual enjoyment despite how heavily stylized and choreographed it is. i particularly enjoyed that two attempts at tribbing ended with mutual masturbation because they preferred actually getting each other off to faking it, taking the paycheck, and going home.

the turning twistys series continues to be a highlight of 2019's girl/girl scene, in my estimation. because twistys (like the rest of mindgeek) prioritizes visuals over chemistry (the former can be used to upsell tube-site browsers but the latter is too much of a dice roll for algorithms to predict), not every installment has been a home run, but the on-base percentage is better than mindgeek's overall girl/girl average. it's a solid first step toward making twistys competitive in the girl/girl market with juggernauts like girlsway (desperately in need of a formula revamp) or sweetheart (so focused on features that individual scenes are an afterthought). i doubt twistys as currently constituted will ever reach the heights that my favorite scenes do, because they're not going to start telling actual stories or getting genuinely cinematic. but there's a place for pop songs as well as symphonies.
