i'm writing this in late september, which is when i finally noticed the release of this short film starring three of my favorite pornstars. i've been mostly dissociated from porn this year aside from the few subscriptions i have left, and have been thinking primarily about other forms of media and engaging with work whose audience is more prepared to analyze it aesthetically and emotionally than the average porn consumer is.
what got me to notice it was natassia dreams tweeting about the xbiz europa nomination for best lesbian sex scene, highlighting that in fifteen years in the industry she had never been nominated for a lesbian award, only having been recognized in trans categories. estella bathory likewise noted that she was the only plus-size performer anywhere in the nominations. as someone who believes that girl/girl porn is way too cis, white, and thin, i was thrilled to have the opportunity to indulge in a scene so directly catered to my interests.
like many of the xconfessions line of porn vignettes based on submissions from site members, it can essentially be divided in two parts: first a lavishly-shot short film based on the themes in the submision, followed by a gonzo porn scene. the addition of fluid animation in the first half (with spanish altcomix icon ana galvañ designing superhero characters based on the three stars!) made for an exceptional display of thoughtfulness and attention to detail, not to mention budget, that almost every other porn studio fails to match. erika lust's brand of high-quality porn, often with an alternative bent, has been extremely successful; if i haven't noticed it here before that's secondarily because girl/girl outings are relatively rare in her collection of sites; primarily, of course, it's that i haven't been consuming much porn at all, and have a budget to think of when i do.
despite the gorgeous animation in the first half, the script is a bit embarrassing, and the acting unconvincing even in the camp style being aimed at. a fantasy of super-sex heroines making the world safe for female orgasms and destroying the patriarchy one chauvinist pig at a time is all good fun, but the budget extending to six non-sex roles means six more opportunities for the overdone script in a bunch of their second language to falter. still, once the intro is over and the three stars are together, their chemistry transcends any language barrier or awkwardness, and their clear enjoyment of each others' talents would make for a winning sexual encounter even if i were indifferent to the women themselves.
but i'm not! luna corazon, with her enthusiastic adventurousness and beautiful afro, has been my favorite porn performer in the european market for the past several years, and estella bathory's poise and imagination have delighted me in the few girl/girl encounters i've had a chance to see. and natassia dreams is both a legend of trans porn and one of the most magnetic performers, regardless of gender, working today. (her scene with ana foxxx for transfixed last year was one of my favorites.) the pleasure-centric sex that the three of them have, making considerable use of toys and hands rather than being confined to the traditional girl/girl limitation of strictly oral, felt far more honest and enthusiastic than the average scene, and none of their energy felt like a put-on for the cameras the way so much porn does: they were clearly having a ball, and therefore so was i.
speaking of the cameras, the cinematography was uniformly gorgeous: the long list of credits at the end, though tiny for a mainstream production, went well beyond the standard in porn, and the hazy, natural-seeming lighting on the sex was a significant part of its charm. the sex was also more closely edited than usual in porn, which was fine by me: the long one-shot takes of so much porn have long since ceased to impress me with their verité quality and now feel sloppy and unimaginative. the sheer intentionality of erika lust's productions are a breath of fresh air.
(i should note here that i have seen accusations of abusive behavior on erika lust's sets, which means that all three of the leading female porn directors — the other two being bree mills and kayden kross — are under something of a cloud for me. i'll get more into it in my year-end wrap-up, i think; unless i don't. no promises.)
