this blog has been stuck for over a year because i didn't know what to say about this scene, or if it was even worth saying anything about at all. so let's try to figure out why that was.
to begin with. sugarbabes.tv is a greek porn site that appears to have been co-founded by pornstar inna innaki, who first made a minor splash in the european scene working for the ddf network some six years ago. the site's girl/girl offerings are sporadic but frequent enough that it landed on my radar early in 2022 thanks to vod sites like adultempire and hotmovies, and because it's a small-budget niche website it has occasionally made some interesting creative choices; the feature-length parody squirt game, an all-girl sendup of squid game, was (barely) eligible for my year-end features list in 2021, and would easily have beaten the runner-up at least, if only i had known about it in time.
none of the girl/girl sex on sugarbabes has ever been remotely credible, but as i've said many times here, that's not necessarily a knock against it: the performers frequently put on a good show, the cameras sometimes capture interesting angles, and there's a streak of experimental ambition in the premises that even on a microbudget can produce work that's worth looking at, even if it never ends up being wholly successful.
that, more or less, was the mindset i had coming into this scene. it's a four-woman outdoor orgy at an anonymous mansion, featuring traditional porn bodies and a traditional porn work ethic; hardly groundbreaking stuff, but i have good will toward the brand and want to write about a wider variety of work from a wider variety of sources than i typically have here, let's give it a shot.
i can't even explain very well why i was disappointed. sure, there's a sequence about ten minutes in where one of the camera men (and a frequent performer on the site) jerks off in the pool while watching them that could have been cut out, but i'm too jaded and (more importantly) too contemptuous of the traditional girl/girl audience's performative loathing of men being anywhere in the vicinity of the scene to care all too much about something like that. (do i want to see men jerking off in girl/girl porn? not particularly; but i'm too old and cynical to feel threatened, disturbed or disgusted by it anymore. "come on dude, be professional" is the most i can muster by way of outrage.)
another issue that affected my reception of the scene, but which is hardly a fault of the scene itself, is that my bluetooth headphones were having trouble keeping a lock on the audio, so the sound would stutter and disappear, and i would have to keep restarting the video to get it to return, and skipping forward too far would make the audio cut out entirely, so experiencing the club music-soundtracked opening tease again and again was enough to put me off the scene for a long time. i soldiered through with the sound off, and eventually was able to download a copy without audio problems, but the bad taste of a frustrating evening lingered on my emotional palate.
visually, there are some absolutely stunning shots: the performers' sculpted bodies, the late-afternoon mediterranean sunlight and the interplay cast by the shadows of trees, the light reflecting off the pool, and a sun approaching the horizon made for some delicious photography of action that otherwise failed to convince me of passion, pleasure or anything other than effort.
the performer credited simply as julia, about whom i have not been able to discover anything outside of the sugarbabes ecosystem, stands out from the rest in her performance of pleasure; everyone else puts in the elbow grease without ever giving the impression of enjoying themselves or having any very convincing technique, in a typically european stonefaced fashion.
ultimately, the scene was fine, the definition of middling, with very little beyond occasionally striking photography of some lovely bodies to recommend it. far too much porn can't even achieve that much; but i've catalogued enough that clears that bar by far enough in these pages that i can't pretend it was in any way significant, except maybe in being a cause for technological frustration. and that's on me more than anyone else. still, subjective experience is all we have. i think the score reflects mine. now to move on with life.
